Vaginal ring

This is a flexible, transparent plastic ring which is inserted into the vagina and releases the two hormones, oestrogen and progestogen.

The ring is not suitable for many people, including those at risk of thrombosis (blood clots).

Key facts:

It’s 99% effective at preventing pregnancy with perfect use and 91% effective with typical use
You don’t have to think about it every day, as you only use one ring a month
The effectiveness of the ring will not be affected by vomiting and diarrhoea

It can sometimes make your periods more regular, lighter and less painful
No STI protection
