Progestogen only Pill (POP)

POP contains the progestogen hormone – a synthetic form of natural progesterone, which is produced in the ovaries.

Key facts:

  • It’s 99% effective at preventing pregnancy with perfect use and 91% effective with typical use
  • There is no break between packs, and you will need to remember to take the pill daily
  • Effectiveness can be affected by vomiting and diarrhoea
  • It’s an option if you can’t use oestrogen (which is found in the combined pill, patch, and vaginal ring)
  • It may stop your periods, or make them irregular
  • No STI protection

How to use:

Once you’re given the prescription at our clinic, one pill must be swallowed daily (at the same time).

If you are late taking the pill (timings will vary depending on which one you take), you are not protected against pregnancy.
