Cu-IUD (Coil)

An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small T-shaped plastic / copper device that’s inserted into your womb (uterus). It’s sometimes called a “copper coil”.

Key facts:

  • It is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
  • Lasts between 5-10 years and once removed your fertility goes straight back to what is normal for you
  • The IUD releases copper (no hormones) to stop you getting pregnant
  • Periods can sometimes get heavier and longer
  • No STI protection

How to use:

You’ll need to have the coil fitted at our clinic or at your GP practice.

If you have any issues after your IUD has been fitted, please contact the clinic to get it checked.
