Injection

The contraceptive injection contains the progestogen hormone – a synthetic form of natural progesterone, which is produced in the ovaries.

There are two main types of injection in the UK; Depo-Provera and Sayana Press.

Key facts:

  • It’s 99% effective at preventing pregnancy with perfect use and 94% effective with typical use
  • You don’t have to think about contraception for as long as the injection lasts (10-14 weeks)
  • It’s not affected by other medicines and can be used during breastfeeding
  • It’s an option if you can’t use oestrogen (which is found in the combined pill, patch and vaginal ring)
  • It may stop your periods
  • No STI protection

How to use:

You’ll need to have an injection at our clinic once every 10-14 weeks.
